Sometimes called Mary of Magdala, or simply the Magdalene or the Madeleine, was a woman who, according to the four canonical gospels, traveled with Jesus as one of his followers and was a witness to his crucifixion and resurrection.
Her name comes from her home town of Magdala, a fishing village on the western shore of Lake Tiberias. St Luke the Evangelist tells us, in Chapter 8 of his Gospel, how Jesus went from town to town announcing the Good News of the Kingdom of God, and how the Twelve Apostles were with Him together with some women who had been healed of evil spirits or infirmities, and were serving them.
She was one of those who stood by the cross of Jesus with his mother. And, of all the “official” witnesses who might have been chosen for the first awareness of the Resurrection, she was the one to whom that privilege was given.
In 2016 Pope Francis raised the level of liturgical memory on July 22 from memorial to feast, and for her to be referred to as the "Apostle of the apostles".
Conocida también como María de Magdala, o simplemente la Magdalena o la Madeleine, fue una mujer que, según los cuatro evangelios canónicos, viajó con Jesús como una de sus seguidoras y fue testigo de su crucifixión y resurrección.
Su nombre proviene de su ciudad natal de Magdala, un pueblo de pescadores en la orilla occidental del lago Tiberíades. San Lucas nos cuenta, en el capítulo 8 de su Evangelio, cómo Jesús iba de pueblo en pueblo anunciando la Buena Noticia del Reino de Dios, y cómo los Doce Apóstoles estaban con Él en compañía de algunas mujeres que habían sido curadas de malos espíritus o enfermedades, quienes les servían.
Ella fue una de las que estuvieron junto a la cruz de Jesús con su madre. Y, de todos los testigos “oficiales” que podrían haber sido elegidos para presencia la Resurrección de Jesús, fue ella a quien se le concedió ese privilegio.
En 2016, el Papa Francisco elevó el nivel de la memoria litúrgica el 22 de julio de memorial a fiesta, y para que ella sea conocida como la "Apóstol de los apóstoles".
